The end of summer signals the start of apple harvest season in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. This list highlights several apple festivals and events to enjoy in the heart of Virginia’s apple country throughout the months of September and October. Enjoy an autumn weekend in the Shenandoah Valley at the area’s premier apple harvest festival. Festival goers will enjoy a free apple for every visitor, an apple pie eating and baking contest, live entertainment, an antique car and truck show, area for Virginia hard ciders and craft beers, and an apple butter making and sales. There will also be a kids zone full of inflatables, face painting, and fun!

The annual Apple Butter Celebration – held on the historic lower level area at Skyland (mile 41.7 & 42.5 on Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park) – features live entertainment, apple infused culinary creations, wine tasting, pony rides, children’s crafts, apple butter and more. Give the kettle a stir, try a delicious sample, then take home some fresh-from-the-kettle jars of apple butter!
Seasonal foods, including apple dumplings, apple butter, barbecues, Allegheny Mountain Trout, and homemade baked goods will be available in the historic districts of Monterey and McDowell. The event features an Arts & Crafts show, Farmers’ Market, Clogging performances, bluegrass music, the Highland Hills Farm 5K Run, and a self-guided Harvest Tour that takes travelers to different farm locations throughout the county.

Apples have long been a part of Winchester-Frederick County’s heritage. Marker-Miller Orchards has 20 varieties of apples to choose from, with pick-your-own available. Apple cobbler and apple cider slushees can be enjoyed while sitting on the front porch or listening to the music each day from 1-3 pm. Kids will love the “cow train”, playground with kiddieland, and room to run. A variety of food will be available in the food building. Wagon rides around the farm can be enjoyed throughout the day!
